Driveways and landscaping, start to finish
Hillcrest Landscapes is a family-run driveway and landscaping company based in Castleford. Every job starts with the groundwork, because that is what decides how a drive or patio lasts, and finishes with the surface you choose: resin, block paving, gravel, natural stone or a new lawn.
Each section below explains what the work involves and what is worth knowing first. If your job is not listed, or you are not sure what it needs, call 07921 384129 or send the form and describe it.
How a resin bound driveway is built up
- Resin bound surface Stone and resin mixed together and trowelled smooth, usually 15 to 18mm deep on a drive
- Base A porous base such as open-graded tarmac, or a sound existing tarmac or concrete drive
- Sub-base Crushed stone, laid in layers and compacted
- Ground Dug out to the right depth, with the falls and drainage set
Resin driveways in Castleford
A resin bound driveway is made by mixing natural stone aggregate with a clear resin and trowelling it out by hand into a smooth, even layer. Rain soaks through the surface instead of running off it, nothing loose ends up on the pavement, and there are no joints for weeds to grow through.
Hillcrest Landscapes installs resin driveways for homes in Castleford and the towns around it. How your drive is built depends on what is there now. Some tarmac and concrete drives are sound enough to lay over, while others need digging out and a new base putting down first. We look at the ground and the drainage when we come to quote, and tell you which applies to yours.
We also explain the difference between resin bound and resin bonded, and help you pick a stone blend and an edging that suit the house.
What a resin driveway can include
- A new porous base, or resurfacing a sound existing drive
- Stone blends from golden and buff tones to greys
- Block paving or contrasting borders
- Drainage planned before anything is laid
- Paths and patio areas in the same finish
Good to know

Block paving driveways
Block paving makes up a large share of Hillcrest’s work. Most of the firm’s reviews on MyBuilder are for block paved drives, from small front drives to drive extensions, side paths and paving around a conservatory.
A block paved drive is only as good as what lies underneath. The ground is dug out, a crushed stone sub-base is laid and compacted, and a bed of sharp sand is screeded level. The blocks go down by hand, the edges are cut and set in, then kiln-dried sand is swept into the gaps and vibrated in with a plate compactor.
The photos on this site show some of the patterns and colours: charcoal herringbone with a buff border, brindle blocks with a charcoal edging course, and grey blocks in mixed tones. Where a drive falls towards the house, a drainage channel can be set in along the wall.

Block paved front driveway
Finished in a few days at a fair price and looks just as planned. Now the neighbours want one too.
Block paving options
- Concrete blocks in a wide range of colours
- Clay pavers
- Herringbone, straight-laid and other patterns
- Contrasting borders and edging courses
- Drainage channels by the house or across the drive
- Permeable blocks where drainage needs them

Driveway installation and extensions
If you are comparing driveway companies near you, Hillcrest takes on the whole job: lifting the old surface or the front lawn, the groundwork and sub-base, the edging and drainage, and the finished surface. That might be resin or block paving, or one of the other finishes below.
Gravel is usually the most affordable finish and drains freely. Permeable paving lets rain soak away through its joints into the ground beneath. Natural stone gives a more traditional look, and suits older houses and cottages.
Smaller jobs are welcome too. On MyBuilder, one customer had a gravel drive extension laid exactly as asked, another had a cracked drive resurfaced, and another had a new paved section blended into the existing drive.

Gravel driveway extension
The extension came out exactly as asked for, with no push towards dearer options when the quote was given.
Driveway work we take on

- Drive extensions and widening
- Gravel driveways
- Permeable driveways
- Paved and natural stone driveways
- Resurfacing a cracked or worn drive

Patio installers in Castleford
A patio has to be flat enough for a table and chairs, with just enough fall to carry rain away from the house. Hillcrest lays patios in Indian sandstone and other stone on a properly compacted base, points the joints, and finishes the edges to suit the garden.
Several photos on this site show a typical Hillcrest patio: sandstone running out from the back of the house, a curved raised stone edge holding back the lawn, and a drainage channel along the wall.
Patios come up again and again in the firm’s MyBuilder reviews, from a new patio with a path beside the garage to a patio of around 40 to 50 square metres laid along with a new fence.

Garden landscaping
Hillcrest is a landscaping company, and plenty of its jobs go beyond the drive or the patio. MyBuilder reviews describe a full rear garden landscaped for a new-build house, turf laid and lawns levelled, stone walls rebuilt, new fences, artificial grass and raised sleeper beds.
If you are looking for landscapers near you in Castleford, a good place to start is a visit. We look at the garden, talk through how you want to use it, and quote for the work. Paths, steps and side passages are often the jobs that make a garden easier to live with day to day.
